Every fall, Medicare’s open enrollment window (October 15–December 7) gives us all a chance to step back and reassess our health coverage for the year ahead. For those I work with in San Diego—seniors and their families—this isn’t just paperwork. It’s about making sure your coverage actually fits your real life: your doctors, medications, pharmacies, travel plans, and what care you might need.
This year, it’s important to note that for 2026, Part D out-of-pocket costs are capped at $2,100, and that cap is estimated to rise to $2,400 in 2027. Medicare Advantage plans, meanwhile, can have annual maximums up to $9,250. As always, keep an eye out in late Q3 for your annual notice; this is the document that spells out changes—costs, benefits, networks, and plan options—so you’re not left guessing.
Remember: if you’re already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you’ll also have from January 1 through March 31 to make a switch or go back to original Medicare. Free counseling is available if you want a second set of eyes on your choices. My background in social work has taught me the value of a no-pressure, open conversation—so when you’re reviewing your options, know that you don’t have to do it alone.
